Hi carolrobpaul
First of all may I welcome you to Westie-World, and the Forum.
In answer to your question, and from my experience, it is not a good idea to leave a West Highland White Terrier all day without contact - this applies for most terriers and some gundogs. They need plenty of social interaction, and are prone to fret badly during their isolation. They may also exhibit attention deficit symptoms, that is, chewing furniture or other objects, self-abuse such as licking parts of their body until raw, digging or tearing with their claws, wetting, etc.
As a guide on this, all Westie rescue services that I have met will not re-home dogs to situations such as this - they must be left no longer than 3-4 hours at a time.
And if you follow my archived diary of Experiences on the main web site, you will be aware that I do not yet have a Westie myself, for two main reasons. Firstly, our two cats absolutely loathe dogs, and it's a no-go certainly because of them.
But also, the three members of my household are all in full-time work, and I would never contemplate getting a Westie until that was resolved, either by retirement or other circumstances (lottery win!).
Can I now ask if you are approaching this question having already obtained a dog, or are you asking with a view to getting one?
Hope to hear back from you soon.
Best wishes
Lee Johnson.

Lee,
we havent got a dog - we decided to look into the matter very closely, hence our question. we would never want to put a dog under any stress caused by our working situation.
thanks for your reply.
